1. 表示“解釋” ， 通常不接雙賓語；若語義上需要這類結(jié)構(gòu)，可以改用 explain sth to sb結(jié)構(gòu) 。如：
請把這條規(guī)則給我們解釋一下 。
誤：Please explain us this rule.
正：Please explain this rule to us.
若其中的 sth 較長或較復(fù)雜（比如是不定式或從句） ， 也可以用explain to sb sth 。如：
He explained to us why he was late. 他給我們解釋了他遲到的原因 。
I’ll explain to you why I like it.
Don’t sign anything until your solicitor has explained the contract to you
在律師向你解釋清楚合同之前，不要簽署任何東西 。
The teacher explained the rules to the children.
老師向孩子們說明規(guī)則 。
It was difficult to explain the problem to beginners.
對初學(xué)者解釋這個問題很難 。
2. explain to sb that/ explain that
I’m going to have to explain to them that I can’t pay them.
我將不得不向他們解釋我不能付錢給他們 。
I explained that an ambulance would be coming soon.
我解釋說救護(hù)車很快就到 。
Alex explained that his car had broken down.
亞歷克斯解釋說他的汽車出了毛病 。
3. explain how 從句
Can you explain how the machine is operated?
請說明如何使用這臺機器好嗎？
Can you explain how the email system works?
你能說明一下電子郵件系統(tǒng)的工作原理嗎？
4. explain wh-從句/ explained to Sb wh-
He explained who each person in the photo was.
他對照片里的人一一作了介紹 。
She explained to them what to do in an emergency.
她向他們說明了緊急情況下應(yīng)采取的行動 。
Well, that doesn’t explain why you didn’t phone.
噯，那不是你不打電話的理由 。
Different hypotheses have been put forward to explain why these foods are more likely to cause problems.

6. explain后接反身代詞作賓語，有兩個意思 。如：
(1) 表示把自己的意思表達(dá)清楚 。如：
Could you explain yourself a bit more? 你能把意思說得更清楚點嗎?
Could you explain yourself a little more─I didn’t understand.
請把你的意思說得更清楚一點——我還不明白 。
(2) 表示對自己的行為進(jìn)行解釋 。如；
I really don’t see why I should have to explain myself to you.
