South is opposite north on a compass. 羅盤(pán)上南與北相對(duì) 。
East or west, home is best. 東好西好不如自己的家好 。
2. 表示“在……的東(南，西，北)”，通常應(yīng)根據(jù)情況選用不同介詞in(表示在范圍之內(nèi)) ， to(表示在范圍之外)，on(表示毗連) 。如：
China is in the east of Asia. 中國(guó)位于亞洲的東部 。
Mexico is to the south of the U. S. A. 墨西哥在美國(guó)以南 。
China faces the Pacific on the east. 中國(guó)東臨太平洋
3. 用作副詞，其前不用介詞，但有時(shí)其后可接介詞短語(yǔ) 。如：
The room faces east, so we get the morning sun. 這房間朝東，所以我們上午能照到太陽(yáng) 。
The village lies east of the woods. 村莊位于樹(shù)林東面 。
比較：The village lies to the east of the woods.
有的詞書(shū)把 east of 之類(lèi)的結(jié)構(gòu)當(dāng)作固定短語(yǔ)看待，將其用作表語(yǔ)、狀語(yǔ)或后置定語(yǔ)等 。如：
Is the Atlantic Ocean east or west of the United States?大西洋是在美國(guó)的東面還是西面?
The Smiths live (five miles) southeast of the town. 史密斯一家住在城鎮(zhèn)東面(五英里的地方) 。
4. 漢語(yǔ)中說(shuō)“東南西北”或“東西南北”，但在英語(yǔ)中卻要說(shuō)成north, south, east and west(北南東西) 或 north, east, south andwest(北東南西)，也有人說(shuō) north, east, west and south(北東西南)，該說(shuō)法中各詞的第一個(gè)字母合起來(lái)是 news(消息) 。
